Do you honestly think ANYONE knows this piece of “On This Day” History? I think not. In fact, I would venture to guess they will think the opposite until they get to the end of the second sentence. Mental drumroll please…

1854 – Some 50 opponents to slavery met at a schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin, to call for a new political group. The organization would later become known as the Republican Party.

Whoa!?! Huh?

That’s what I thought. And, to be fair I didn’t realize that either, well at least I didn’t realize that event happened on this day 159 years ago.

Lincoln was a Republican, if you’re keeping score. Funny how history gets re-written and distorted over time.
