MMeM, Vol. 15 Issue 7 – Mint?
Those can be very refreshing.

P

eople have lost their ever lovin’ minds! Look, here’s the deal. You’ve seen the Instagram posts and Tweets that many mental giants proudly send out of “packaged – air”. They act like they’ve uncovered some massive fraud or finally photographed Bigfoot in the wild. I just want to tap these non-MENSA members on the forehead and say, “It’s for packaging purposes and the air is to protect and preserve the quality of the product. Sure, while they are at it, the manufacturers are making good use of the space for ADVERTISING by colorful pictures, words, and descriptions!”

There I said it. I’m sorry if it hurts and the the truth can be caustic sometimes, but some apparently need to be reminded. All of this is to lead to this story.

Dateline, Illinois in 2018 a woman sued Tootsie Roll Industries over the fact that her Junior Mints candy box had almost as much air in it as candy. In a world of frivolous lawsuits this one takes the mint-cake for me. First of all, it’s an obvious waste of time to remind the woman, food packaging has to state the net weight of the contents on the outside (3.5 OZ in this case).

The reason for this is, in part, due to the fact that AIR has no measurable weight. IF the woman would prefer to be sold a roll of Junior Mints with absolutely NO AIR in it, then her lawsuit would have been regarding her inability to eat said Junior Mints in an individual one-at-a-time manner as they would have been all stuck together not mention most likely smashed and smooshed. THAT would have led to forced over-eating of the entire package and subsequently obesity for which only Tootsie Roll Industries would have been held accountable!

Finally, people marvel at the fact that 8 out of 10 businesses fail in the first 18 months of operation. The real miracle is how, in today’s world of lawsuits and baby-me consumerism, a business manages to survive at all.

Yes, it takes something…

“Something beyond science. Something perhaps, from above.”

“Mint?” (Kramer)

“Those can be very refreshing…”
