MMeM, Vol.13 Issue 20 – Cigarillos?

…like a monkey and a football?

For Lefty, part two. Well, Grandpa, like I told you last Fall the Cubs did it. 2016 World Series Champions! At that time, I made a promise in my previous post here to you that I would smoke a cigar to you for the occasion. Whelp, here we are on the first day of the 2017 season, and yes, I still owe you.

BUT, I have made good on my promise! Was it a bit like a monkey and a football? Yes, it was, but nevertheless, I got it done and with 3 hours to spare before our Cubs begin the season in St. Louis of all places against that out-of-state team from the South.

First of all, I feel I need to let you know that finding anything remotely resembling the type of cigar I remember you smoking, before you quit them cold-turkey, is next to impossible. Today it’s all about cigarillos, Swisher Sweets, and vaping. Vaping? It’s, well, or just forget it, you’re better off not even hearing about that.

Eventually, at my 4th stop I found something that could pass for the White Owl or King something I remember you using. The sellers were so happy to help, and admitted that real cigars like yours are a rarity and hardly anyone buys them anymore. They loved my story and sent me on my way.

They were equally cordial when I returned 20 minutes later to purchase a LIGHTER! See, today we use cigarette lighters as power outlets for devices like CELL PHONES. No? Ok, here’s one you’d understand, I use one of mine, (we now have 2-4 in cars) for my CB. Yeah, that sounds familiar to YOU doesn’t it? Why don’t I have it wired directly? I’ll have to explain that one at another time.

Anyway… Next, I had to decide where to “light up?” Then it dawned on me, the only place around here that seemed appropriate was the ballpark, Robin Roberts Stadium.

Finally, I needed to drive the 5 miles home with this lit cigar and not burn myself or the inside of my truck while trying to direct smoke and ash out the open window. Again, my vehicle-factory provided smoking devices now have other uses.

All in all, I’m really glad I shared this with you and that nothing was broken and no one was injured, or burned.

Love and miss you Grandpa. Go Cubs Go! (cough…cough)
