MMeM, Vol.12 Issue 28 – Gold in golf?

…maybe he’ll have a run in Tokyo.

So the olympics in Rio finally ended on Sunday. I don’t know about you, but I thought it was quite a successful 2 weeks of sports and fanfare for sure. Of course the U.S. was fantastic and there were several wonderful stories from many countries and athletes to be had. Oh there were some less than fantastic news stories, unfortunately, #LochteMESS (Note- purposely choosing to go with a mash-up of Loch Ness rather than LochteGATE, thank you very much).

  • There was the American pole vaulter who stopped in mid vault to stand at attention for the playing of the national anthem being done for a medal presentation for a gold medalist
  • the U.S. female accountant who became the worlds greatest triathlon competitor and won the olympic race
  • the U.S. female gymnastic team members
  • the U.S. Basketball teams
  • the Brazilian Soccer team finally winning the gold medal in the olympics on their 13th attempt and doing so on the fifth and final penalty kick by team captain Neymar, on and on….

One of the smaller stories this logoolympics was the fact that golf was brought back as an olympic sport for the first time since 1904! I mean, who knew?

There were several stories about lots of athletes choosing not to participate due to concerns with the mosquito born zika virus scare. There was, unfortunately, quite a few golfers that opted not to participate in the olympics due to this concern.

Anyway, when looking back at the medal counts of different countries, I can’t help but wonder if this is the reason that one country didn’t choose to capture a sure-fire gold medal in golf. I mean everyone knows that Kim Jong Un is reportedly the greatest living golfer on planet Earth. Either zika or his ongoing war with the Indian Ocean kept him from capturing the gold medal in golf this olympics, but maybe he’ll have a run in Tokyo.

He hasn’t posted a 34 under par yet, like his father did once with 11 holes in one, but he did claim to shoot a measly 7 under 64 once, “Ho-hum”.
